An invitation for public comment

Did you know that land trusts are the only nonprofit that makes a long-term pledge to be here for generations to come? It’s true. We pledge to be here to support the conservation work we accomplish in partnership with landowners and community members for perpetuity (many, many generations).  That’s a pledge we take seriously, and as part of that effort, we are working hard to build a strong, dynamic and responsive organization to withstand the test of time.

A central component in our commitment to excellence and resilience is to become nationally accredited, a process that involves extensive outside review of our policies and programs to help ensure we are going to be around for years to come.

To become accredited, the Land Trust Accreditation Commission, an independent branch of the Land Trust Alliance, undertakes a review to ensure that we are using “best management practices” for land trusts, as outlined by the Land Trust Alliance. Many of these practices focus on the ethical and technical operation of a land trust. If you are interested, you can review them here: http://www.landtrustaccreditation.org/tips-and-tools/indicator-practices.

As part of our application, we’d love your input. The Accreditation Commission invites public input and accepts signed, written comments on pending applications. Your comments should focus on how, to the best of your knowledge, Kaniksu Land Trust complies with these national quality standards.

It is our hope that in the not-too-distant future we will be able to look back at the day we became accredited and say, ‘our conservation work took a giant step towards permanency and excellence when we became accredited.’

To learn more about the accreditation program and to submit a comment, visit www.landtrustaccreditation.org, or email your comment to info@landtrustaccreditation.org.  Comments may also be faxed or mailed to the Land Trust Accreditation Commission, Attn: Public Comments: (fax) 518-587-3183; (mail) 36 Phila Street, Suite 2, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.  Comments on Kaniksu Land Trust’s application will be most useful by May 24, 2015.

Thank you for all you do to support local conservation and for caring about our goal of joining the other 301 land trusts in the country who are accredited.
