Camp Kaniksu 2018

Tuesday, 28 August 2018 by Cami
I’ve come to believe that given enough time and an encouraging adult, any child will come to love nature.  There are some like my nieces, Nala and Nishta, who need no convincing and are up for any adventure outside.  Others who have grown up with less outdoor time and more screen time take more encouraging

Spring WildCrafting

Monday, 12 March 2018 by Cami
WildCrafting is a KLT out-of-school program that engages kids to be creative using natural materials and simple hand tools. During the winter, time spent out in nature decreases for many kids so we bring a little nature to them.  This comes in the form of birch bark, ocean spray shoots, red osier, dogbane, salmon skins,

Snow Camp

Tuesday, 16 January 2018 by Cami
Sixteen smiling faces eagerly inhaled the cold crisp air of the new year as Cami, Topher and I embarked on a 3-day snow camp in early January. There was a lot of pent up energy in the group as we made our way across the U of I landscape in to the forest. Kids tumbled

Winter/Spring 2018 WildCrafting

Tuesday, 09 January 2018 by Cami
The idea for a WildCrafting club began when I started working with some teenagers and experienced how few of them had ever handled any tools or spent time in creating things with natural materials. I followed my instincts believing that an experience of regularly learning and being trusted with the use of tools would be

WildCrafting

Wednesday, 08 November 2017 by Cami
The idea for KLT’s WildCrafting program began as a slow seed taking time to germinate and grow. While working at a boarding school,  I began to see the value in getting teenagers to work with their hands creating things.  Many times I had students look questioningly at me when I offered them a chance to

Camp Kaniksu 2017

Thursday, 21 September 2017 by Cami
The summer flew by in a wonderful kaleidoscope of sounds, smells, texture: bird calls, giggles, wet grass, cottonwood sap, oozing mud, smooth bark, and clear refreshing water.  Each day a different adventure around the wheel, the book of nature, opening up mysteries and making them touchable, tangible, real.  This was my childhood and now I
